What is Our World Coming To?
After traveling the world a bit, learning amazing things, meeting tons of interesting people and talking to one person in specific - a 24-year-old, Silicon Valley, techie, while in Beijing, I thought to myself, “What is Our World Coming To?” Not because of the messenger who relayed the information, but because of the content of the message. He was telling me about a new site called Ashley Madison, where married people go to have an affair. Their tag line is “Life is Short, Have an Affair.” I almost threw up when I heard about this concept. While some people think it’s hilarious, cute, silly and funny. I think that it is downright appalling. Encouraging people who have entered in a committed marriage to have an affair by meeting people through a social network is pretty low. Of course, happily married couples should have nothing to worry about and if their significant other chooses to have an affair (or multiple) affairs than they shouldn’t be married in the first place. I think what bothers me most about this site is that it is so unethical and immoral. It is the principle that this site even exists. Dangling the carrot, facilitating and promoting women and men to cheat on their significant others is really a sad approach to monetization. While watching CNN last night, a commercial for Ashley Madison was featured and that made me think, does CNN approve of this commercial? Of this concept? Of this immoral behavior? And then I thought, why should I support CNN if they support Ashley Madison? Okay, that might be over exaggerating a bit, however, that is what went through my head. Reputations are built off of links to certain brands. Sorry CNN, but this is a really bad “link” for you. Shows that you just want the money rather than appropriate content affiliation. I strongly disrespect the people who created this concept and this product. Now, more than ever, I’m thinking to myself - “What is Our World Coming To?”
