A Girls in Tech Feature in SiliconValleyWatcher, ZDNet
After a lovely lunch and interview with notable former Financial Times writer, and founder, editor of popular tech blog, SiliconValleyWatcher, Tom Foremski, I was wondering what was written down on that small note pad of his and what was left off. After reading through his very accurate encapsulation of the organization that I founded, Girls in Tech, I was really excited to share his article to the readers of my blog. His entry really highlights the primary reasons that I started the organization and focuses on deep, personal roots for wanting and needing to help other women in the tech field, or just in general. Not sure but maybe my maternal side has a megaphone these days, because I really feel happy and proud when I positively influence an aspiring, young career woman or girl to achieve her dreams, take risks and challenge herself. This is a calling and something that my Mom taught me at a very young age. She would say, “just be your beautiful self, do the best that you can, and watch your reputation.” Wise words of wisdom from a minority female that migrated to the US at 19 years old to become a successful small business owner. I am very lucky, to say the least.
Here are some of my quotes from Foremski’s piece that I’d like to highlight:
“Women in the work place are very competitive with each other and that makes the glass ceiling twice as thick . . .”
“When women get together we can connect on a deeper level than if men are around,” says Ms Gascoigne. “It helps to build confidence and it helps to create stronger relationships.”
“It is important to embrace feminity, to embrace girliness,” says Ms Gascoigne. “Too many women think they need to be more like men to succeed. You don’t.”
